Field tour: Oak Woodland Restoration at Marais des Cygnes Wildlife Area and Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge

This field tour will visit an upland oak woodland restoration study being conducted at Marais des Cygnes Wildlife Area located in southeastern Kansas. The study is a collaborative effort among the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the U.S. Forest Service, and the University of Missouri. The study objectives are to determine the differing effects among combinations of thinning and burning treatments on species, fuels, and vegetation structure. Emphasis will be placed on discussing and viewing the different effects of fire and thinning on oaks and their major competitors, particularly sugar maple. In addition, there will be a site visit at Marais Des Cygnes NWR a recent timber harvest and TSI project within bottomland hardwoods.
